Every factory producing sago and starch is a mini power station which will meet its need for running the generators and/or it could be used for sago roasting purposes. Having got convinced that the effluent is a source of energy a private factory sought my assistance to put the effluent gas into use. However the owners while appreciating the state-of-art technology of NJIT pleaded that they would like to have a simple system due to pecuniary circumstances. Then I remembered I have read somewhere that anaerobic pond was created to treat the wastes of 2000 cattle in Zamore, California, U.S. and study was made for devising an inexpensive method of collecting methane from lagoons by using plastic sheetings. As per my advice a plastic sheet was covered over the effluent tank. To our great surprise the plastic sheet bulge within a few minutes. Eureka! We got the gas without any cost. The owners claim that they are saving Rs.2000($50) spent on firewood and another RS.1000($25) towards electricity every day. Due to uniform heat they could produce a high quality product of sago which fetched a better price.

The Association of Energy Engineers, Atlanta, Georgia U.S. has conferred the prestigious ‘International Award’ for the years 1999 for having achieved national and international prominence in promoting energy engineering and energy management.
